Why can't I make or receive calls in Switzerland?
Since the Sunrise 3G mobile network is completely deactivated now, incoming and outgoing calls are only possible with a device that is at least 4G-capable and supports VoLTE. VoLTE must be switched on the device for this.
If your device already supports at leas 4G and VoLTE, but you can't still make or receive calls, please activate VoLTE (Voice over LTE). VoLTE is active on your device if the 4G/5G icon still appears at the top of your screen when you’re making a call.
Here you will find the guide to activate VoLTE for mobile phones. Regularly your device attaches to the correct mobile network automatically again after activating VoLTE. If it does not attach automatically, sometimes restart or flight mode are needed.
Important note: Devices purchased abroad or from unofficial retailers may be equipped with firmware that is not intended for the Swiss market. This can result in VoLTE not being activated, even though the device is technically VoLTE-capable.
With 3G device there’s no mobile internet, no calls, no SMS anymore. If you want to stay connected, you’ll need a new at least 4G-capable device which supports VoLTE. Most modern devices already support 4G, 5G, and VoLTE.
Some devices are 4G-capable, but don’t support VoLTE.
The 3G network is outdated and inefficient compared to modern 4G and 5G technologies. Switching it off allows us to free up resources, improve energy efficiency, and provide faster, more reliable mobile services.
Please note that all Swiss mobile providers are gradually shutting down their 3G networks in 2025.
